Best Merino Wool Gifts For Men
Most men have one memory of wool and it is a bad one. A jumper, a school uniform, something that itched for an entire winter.
That was not merino. Or rather, it was not merino at this fineness, and the difference is measured in microns.

Why merino is the gift that gets worn.
Merino absorbs moisture into the core of the fibre and releases it as vapour. It regulates temperature in both directions, cooling in heat and insulating when it turns. And it resists odour naturally, which means it can be worn several days running before washing.
That last property is the one that turns a gift into a favourite. He will notice it in the first week and it will change how he packs for a trip.
Micron count and the prickle threshold
Prickle is mechanical, not an allergy. It correlates with the percentage of fibres coarser than roughly 30 micron. Source: Naylor, Stanton and Speijers, Textile Research Journal, 2014.
If wool has itched him before, it was not this. It was twice the thickness.
What to buy, depending on him.
If he trains most days
The Active Merino Liner Short. Organic cotton shell, merino liner at 17.5 micron sitting next to skin. No separate underwear needed, which is the part he will not expect.
If he travels
The Merino Air T-Shirt. A 150gsm open knit of merino and Tencel he can wear several days running without it turning. Packs down, does not crease badly, does not need a laundry.
If he trains somewhere hot
The Merino Air Vest. Same knit, no sleeves. Merino dumps heat rather than trapping it, which is the opposite of what a synthetic vest does.
Where the wool comes from matters.
Ours is RWS certified. The Responsible Wool Standard bans mulesing, requires the Five Freedoms of animal welfare, and certifies every site from the farm through to the finished garment.
Most merino sold as premium carries no certification at all. If a brand does not name the standard, there is not one.
Every fibre is traceable, from the pasture it grew on to the garment he wears.

Tell him to wash it less.
The instinct with new clothing is to wash it after every wear. With merino that is the wrong instinct. Air it overnight and it is ready again. Cold wash when it is genuinely dirty, no fabric softener, line dry.
Treated properly, it lasts years rather than seasons.
The short version
Merino at 17.5 micron is nothing like the wool he remembers. It regulates temperature both ways, absorbs moisture into the fibre rather than pushing it onto his skin, and resists odour well enough to wear back to back.
Every product here is RWS certified with no polyester, nylon or elastane in it. And there are 99 days to change your mind, which takes the risk out of buying clothing for someone else.
